NPR Music has simply put out its first e-book: How Girls Made Music. It collects greater than 50 years of essays and interviews from the community, impressed by our sequence Turning The Tables. Launched in 2017, Turning The Tables considers how the canon of well-liked music would change if we centered girls as a substitute of males. What albums and songs would dominate conversations if girls and different marginalized voices have been those having them?

On this episode, NPR Music’s Ann Powers and contributor Marissa Lorusso speak with host Robin Hilton in regards to the new e-book and share a few of the music that impressed it, from Joni Mitchell’s Blue to Beyoncé’s Lemonade, Massive Mama Thornton’s “Hound Canine” and extra, together with Kate Bush, Tracy Chapman, Towards Me!.
