On this episode initially from Standards: The Catholic Movie
Podcast, Thomas asks lawyer and scholar Louis Karlin whether or not
Robert Bolt’s play and movie A Man for All
Seasons precisely depict St. Thomas Extra’s views on the
rights of conscience, and his motives for martyrdom.
Extra’s involvement within the prosecution of heretics can be
examined: even when Extra was a martyr of conscience, is it correct
to name him a champion of non secular freedom? One factor is definite:
the portrayal by Hilary Mantel and others of Extra as a torturer of
heretics is fake.
