Saint Etienne have introduced their twelfth studio album: The Evening is out December 13 through Heavenly Recordings. The follow-up to 2021’s I’ve Been Attempting To Inform You is led by the only ‘Half Mild’. Test it out under and scroll down for the LP’s cowl artwork and tracklist.
The British trio produced The Evening in collaboration with composer and producer Augustin Bousfield. The LP was recorded throughout two areas in Saltaire and Hove, from January to August 2024.
“It was nice to all be in the identical studio collectively once more up at Gus’ in Bradford,” Pete Wiggs mentioned in an announcement, persevering with:
We realized that it had been a number of years since we’d truly carried out that, sprawling out on the carpet, mugs of espresso in hand, sheets of lyrics and half concepts for titles mendacity round us.
We needed to proceed the mellow and spacey temper of the final album, even perhaps double down on it, but it surely’s a really totally different album, not based mostly on samples; Songs, moods and spoken items drift out and in while rain pours down exterior. It’s the sort of file I prefer to take heed to at nighttime or with my eyes closed.
‘Half Mild’ is in regards to the fringe of evening, the final rays of the solar flickering by the branches of bushes, communing with nature and seeing issues which may not be there.
Sarah Cracknell added: “It was so good to be again within the studio collectively after recording the final album remotely. Considered one of my favourite songs on the file is ‘Preflyte,’ it made me cry once I sang it for the primary time.”
Discussing the album as a complete, Bob Stanley had this to say:
We needed The Evening to be a chilled album, heat and serene, however on the identical time we needed to create one thing attractive and dense.
We have been looking for the state that’s between being awake and asleep, that dream house, with half forgotten ideas drifting in, bits of TV dialogue, place names, streets, or soccer grounds you’ve by no means even been to. You are feeling very receptive to sound and half-covered recollections if you’re in that state.
Rain noise runs proper by it. It was designed to softly wash away the stuff in your head that retains you awake at 2am.
I feel The Evening sounds actually three-dimensional. A variety of that’s right down to Gus Bousfield who performed the guitars and did an exquisite manufacturing job. Recording it in his studio, with a lot mild and house, has helped to form it too. The three of us introduced in our personal songs, however lyrically we have been all in tune with one another with out having to swap notes first.
You would consider it as one steady, single monitor. It’s undoubtedly a headphone album.
