HOFFMANN’S WOODPECKER(Species Account Weblog #118)

TAXONOMIC TREE:

  • ORDER: Piciformes – Woodpeckers, Barbets, Toucans and Honeyguides
  • FAMILY: Picidae – Woodpeckers,
  • BINOMIAL NAME: Melanerpes hoffmannii

A typical bar-backed Melanerpes, Hoffmann’s Woodpecker is essentially creamy under and on the pinnacle, with a darkish grey again and black wings, each closely barred in white, whereas the nape is golden yellow; males even have a small pink crown patch. Like many Melanerpes, this woodpecker has proved itself capable of adapt to human-modified habitats. Certainly, it shuns dense forest, preferring semiopen wooded nation, particularly in xeric areas. It ranges from sea degree to over 2000 m elevation. Consequently, regardless of being restricted to the Pacific slope of Central America, from Honduras south to Costa Rica, Hoffmann’s Woodpecker will not be perceived to be threatened by deforestation. Hoffmann’s Woodpecker Distribution Map (from Birds of the World)

In Costa Rica we noticed Hoffmann’s Woodpecker at nearly each low to mid-elevation cease between Punta Leona and Rancho Naturalista.
