Whereas the Catholic Church has condemned Marxism, Communism and
socialism from their starting, an alarming variety of these calling
themselves Catholic show a sympathy for these concepts: consider
America journal’s 2019 essay on “The Catholic Case of
Communism”. Even some orthodox Catholic intellectuals appear to assume
we must always mine the writings of Marx for no matter reality is likely to be
contained among the many garbage.

Except for the truth that Marx’s philosophy represents a warfare on
being itself (in his phrases, “the ruthless criticism of all that
exists”), making it somewhat troublesome to seek out untainted morsels of
reality in his writings, there are different causes to steer clear. If
philosophy is actually the pursuit of knowledge, we must always care concerning the
private lives of philosophers. Marx was a deeply vicious man. He
displayed full contempt for his fellow man, was a virulent
racist, despised God and faith, and was an utter hypocrite when
it got here to cash, always sponging off his household and
acquaintances.

Past all that, there’s the distinct sense of one thing
demonic in Marx’s private life. Those that knew him most intimately
persistently described him in demonic phrases: His son wrote to him
as “my pricey satan”, his father instructed that he was “ruled by a
demon”, and Engels referred to him as a “monster of ten thousand
devils”.

Marx himself was obsessive about the Satan, writing poems and
performs about characters who make pacts with Devil and are resigned
to their very own damnation. He even instructed his kids an ongoing
bedtime story a few man who offered his soul to the satan. (Marx’s
two daughters would die in suicide pacts with their husbands, who
had been atheistic revolutionaries like their father-in-law.)

On this episode, Paul Kengor, writer of The Satan and Karl
Marx
, discusses this (exhaustively footnoted) proof of the
demonic in Marx’s life. What impressed this man with a lot hatred
that he referred to as for the “ruthless criticism of all that exists”,
starting with faith?
