What does authorities boycott of Haaretz imply for press freedom in Israel? | Israel-Palestine battle


Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cupboard approves proposal to sanction the nation’s oldest newspaper.

Israel’s cupboard has accredited a proposal to chop all authorities hyperlinks with Haaretz – a transfer that would cripple the 105-year-old newspaper financially and pressure it to close down.

Haaretz has condemned the motion, describing it as “one other step in [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu’s journey to dismantle Israeli democracy”.

Can a free information media survive in Israel?

And may Israel’s Western allies strain it to respect the democratic values they are saying they stand for?
